Bedrock vs Java Minecraft Hosting Differences
MinecraftBeginner
Two editions, two server stacks
Minecraft Java and Bedrock are different products. A Java Paper server will not accept a Bedrock console client, and a Bedrock dedicated world is not a drop-in for Java. Pick the edition your group already plays, then order that product on GlassHosting.
Networking and ports
- Java: typically TCP (often port 25565). Share
IP:portfrom the panel. - Bedrock: dedicated servers speak UDP (often 19132). Consoles and Windows Bedrock expect that path.
Cross-play bridges (Geyser and similar) are advanced: treat them as a project with backups, not a checkbox. Edition mismatch looks like an “outage” when it is simply the wrong client.
Plugins vs add-ons
- Java SMPs commonly run Paper with Bukkit/Paper plugins.
- Bedrock uses add-ons / behavior packs. Do not upload Java
.jarplugins into a Bedrock tree. - Forge/Fabric modpacks are Java-only and unrelated to Bedrock.
Pick for your group
- List devices: PC Java launcher vs phones/consoles/Windows Bedrock.
- If everyone is on Java → host Java (Paper for most friend SMPs).
- If anyone must join from console Bedrock without a bridge → host Bedrock.
- Confirm the GlassHosting product image matches that choice before uploading a world.
Verify / done
- One trusted player on the intended client joins using the panel address.
- Wrong-edition clients fail predictably: you did not “break” the server.
- World edition matches the host (never drop Bedrock files into Java or the reverse).
