Minecraft Realms vs Dedicated Server on GlassHosting

Realms vs your own dedicated server

Minecraft Realms is Mojang's rented private world for a small friend group. It is simple, official, and capped. A dedicated server on GlassHosting is a full Java (or Bedrock) service you control in the game panel: backups you name, plugins or mods when you choose them, and a join address you share yourself.

This guide is for home users and friend SMPs who are deciding whether Realms is still enough. Glass Gaming, powered by GlassHosting. New to hosting? Start with the first Minecraft server checklist and when to leave home PC hosting.

What Realms is good at

  • Fast start with almost no ops language.
  • Official Mojang billing and client integration.
  • Small private groups that stay Vanilla and never need plugins.
  • No port numbers to explain to friends who only use the Realms button.

If that is your whole need forever, Realms can stay the right product. The gap shows up when you want backups you control, a custom modpack, Paper plugins, a whitelist habit, or more seats than the Realms tier allows.

Signals it is time to leave Realms

  1. Someone asks for a plugin, economy, claims, or anti-grief that Realms cannot run.
  2. You want a modpack the whole group already plays in single-player.
  3. You need a backup before a risky change, and a restore you can trigger yourself.
  4. The group outgrew the Realms player cap or wants a public-ish allowlist community.
  5. You already tried home hosting and hit CGNAT or Wi-Fi join failures (CGNAT explained, home Wi-Fi vs datacenter).

Move without drama

  1. Order a Minecraft plan at billing.glasshosting.com and wait for panel access.
  2. Accept eula.txt (set eula.txt to true), then take a named backup before any world import.
  3. Export or copy the Realms / single-player world, then follow Upload your Minecraft world.
  4. Set whitelist and OP for the core group (whitelist guide, OP guide).
  5. Share IP:port, smoke-test one join, then invite the rest.

Keep Realms online until the GlassHosting smoke-test passes. Cut over on purpose, not mid-session.

What we will not claim

GlassHosting does not replace Mojang account login. Realms remains a Mojang product. We do not invent uptime badges or "unlimited everything" marketing. You get a managed game service with panel tools and human support when something breaks.

GlassHosting treats the Realms-to-dedicated jump like any cutover: backup, verify join, then retire the old path. Order or manage plans at billing.glasshosting.com; operate day-to-day at panel.glasshosting.com. Glass Gaming, powered by GlassHosting.
